Introduction to computer hardware – Part 10

well the best way to learn about computers (hardware) is to just have a look-see inside one. but don’t take anything out yet. unless it doesn’t work or you don’t care. but before you touch anything unplug it. on the back of the power supply there is a switch, turn it off. (the power supply is that big fan on the back of your tower with the power cable sticking out of it)

now that you’ve seen the inside of it I’ll tell you all the basic parts in there. but sense I can’t insert pictures on helium then I’ll have to describe what’s what the best I can.

motherboard. the motherboard is that huge chip that everything is plugged into. or electronic holding area.

processor. the processor is the thing with the fan on top of it on the motherboard. it should be sticking up about three inches.

graphics card. the graphics card is the chip that you plug your monitor into. if you look at the back you’ll see a blue slot where you plugged your monitor into. fallow it into the tower and it is attached to the chip known as the graphics card or video card. some motherboards have a integrated graphics card. this just means that it is inside the big boy and you can’t take it out.

sound card. the sound card is the thing you plug your internet cable into. fallow it into the tower and you’ll see it. it should be right next to the graphics card. unless the graphics card is integrated.

RAM. the RAM stands for random access memory. it’s the five inch long chip that is held in place by two white clamps. there may be two to four of them in there. basically RAM is the speed. once it runs something it deletes it.

hard drive. now it’s hard to say what a hard drive looks like but I’ll try. it’s about four inches wide, it should have a twenty pin cable running out of it unless it’s a SATTA hook up. but it look like a small CD drive but you can’t put a disc into it. the hard drive is where all your files are stored.

power supply. the power supply is the big metal thing with a crap load of cords coming out of it. it also has a number of fans on it so it can cool down.

but if you really really care about learning about computers you should pick up a few books. they’ll tell you more about computers then any online article can. so don’t be afraid to spend some coin to learn about something very useful in today’s world. hope you liked the article and found it helpful. thank you.
