How to install RAM: Installing more RAM (Random Access Memory) on your computer will help your computer run faster. Of course with installing RAM you will have to open up your computer, and with anything electrical you will need to take caution. Installing RAM does not necessarily mean that your computer will run faster and usually if you have already added RAM or memory to your computer it can even slow your computer performance down.
Unless you have an old computer you will need to install DIMM (Dual In-Line Memory Module). When installing any new computer component you should always check with the computer manual.
You are going to need a Phillips screwdriver, the RAM, and the computer you are installing the RAM into.
First, you need to make sure that you and your computer are safe so you will need to turn off your computer and unplug it. Now you can open up your computer, it’s different with every computer but is very simple. You will need to be very careful of static electricity while working with your computer, building up a charge can short out part of your computer. You can buy an anti-static wrist strap at computer hardware stores or you can simply touch anything metal to remove any static.
Now you will need to locate where the RAM is in your computer and find an empty slot. If you’ve never installed RAM on your system before you should have at least one empty slot for your RAM. Again, you will need to consult your manual to find out which slot will need to be filled first, some computers require you to fill one before the other. The RAM retaining clips need to be opened before the RAM can be installed. Simply press the clips outward so the slot is open.
Now you will be able to install your RAM into the computer. Pick up your RAM by the edges being careful not to touch the memory itself as it can destroy it. In most cases it will only fit into the slot one way so if it fits you know you’ve done it correctly. Press the RAM into the slot firmly and close the retaining clips over it so they are back into place. After this your RAM should be properly installed.
All that needs to be done now is to replace the back of the computer and screw it back into position. Turn your computer on and make sure that the installation of your RAM was successful by checking if the space on your hard drive has increased.
