Introduction to computer hardware

Computer hardware is a part of our computer system which can not only be seen, but also touched. It includes our monitor, CPU, keyboard, mouse, modem, printer and so on. Thus, these are the physical parts of our computer system.

There are various hardware that can be attached to our computer. Below I will discuss some of them:

(1) Central Processing Unit: (CPU)

This is the most basic part of our computer system, which can also be called the brain of our computer. The big box which can be seen containing the floppy drive, CD drive etc. is known as the CPU. Laptops do not have these big boxes, but they still have CPU at the bottom.

CPU contains many things inside it which are generally of concern to a computer technician. You should not touch or try to repair these internal parts of CPU if you don’t know about them. Some of the main internal parts of CPU are processor (Intel Pentium, Athlon etc.), hard disk, CD drive/writer, floppy drive, internal modem, sound card, vga card, random access memory (RAM), read only memory (ROM), motherboard and so on.

Thus, CPU is a hardware which consists various other (more…)

Keeping up with the latest developments in computer software

There are a couple of ways that I personally keep up to date with computer software.

1. Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.org/)

These guys are great with general technology news as well as the latest development in software. Not only new software releases hand-picked and announced by their awesome board of editors, they have a great community of passionate geeks who are always ready to give you their highly biased opinion. When you’ve got extremes working together, what you get is a pretty good picture of what’s happening.

2. Digg (http://www.digg.com/)

Digg is another site that comprises of links contributed by its members who, in themselves are constantly keeping track of the latest and greatest in the tech scene. People posts links, others vote on them, and what you get in the end is the cream of the crop.

3. VersionTracker (http://www.versiontracker.com /)

VersionTracker is a site that has taken upon itself to keep track of the latest updates for a majority of software that is out there. By checking out their homepage from time to time, you can easily keep track of the latest releases of software that you already use, and a few that you probably haven’t.

Shutdown Day: Can you go without your computer for a day? – Part 1

Hey you, move your eyes slowly from the screen take your hands off the keyboard and back away from the computer with your hands on top of your head. If being on the computer more than eight hours a day were against the law; then I am guilty.

I bought my first computer in 1996 and since then my life has been filled with never ending emails, instant messaging, chat rooms and Google. At work, I am on the computer four hours a day. After work, I am on the computer for another 4 to 6 hours. You can say that I am obsessed.

My computer obsession at first was just a hobby, learning graphic design, web design and dabbling in digital scrap booking. Then after my daughter was born in 1998, my computer has become my lifeline. Without my computer, I would have never learned that children with my daughter’s disease do live. Without my computer, I would have never met my network of friends who have helped me understand my daughter’s disease and how to take care of her. Without my computer, I would not be able to research the medications (more…)

Computer Security Ethics and Privacy
By:Vincent Deguzman
Http://www.allsecurityinfo.net

Today, many people rely on computers to do homework, work, and create or store useful information. Therefore, it is important for the information on the computer to be stored and kept properly. It is also extremely important for people on computers to protect their computer from data loss, misuse, and abuse. For example, it is crucial for businesses to keep information they have secure so that hackers can’t access the information. Home users also need to take means to make sure that their credit card numbers are secure when they are participating in online transactions. A computer security risk is any action that could cause lost of information, software, data, processing incompatibilities, or cause damage to computer hardware, a lot of these are planned to do damage. An intentional breach in computer security is known as a computer crime which is slightly different from a cypercrime. A cybercrime is known as illegal acts based on the internet and is one of the FBI’s top priorities. There are several distinct categories for people that cause cybercrimes, and they are refereed as hacker, cracker, cyberterrorist, cyberextortionist, unethical employee, (more…)

Introduction to computer hardware – Part 3

Computer hardware isn’t that easy to understand, so let’s make this simple: first we need to divide peripherals from hardware devices.

Peripherals include:

-Monitor

-Keyboard

-Mouse

-Speakers

*Basically everything that you plug into your computer from outside of the case. We are all familiar with these parts, otherwise we wouldn’t be reading this right now. Please note that there are external hard drives and storage drives.

Hardware devices include:

-Motherboard

* The biggest piece of hardware inside the case. All of the smaller cards and things plug into this. Basically it helps the pieces communicate with each other.

-Hard drive(s)

* They are brick-like devices and are relatively heavy. They are usually located at the “front” of the case, supported by racks. This is where all of the data is stored. They connect to the motherboard with flat cables.

*Other drives include DVD/CD and Floppy drives. These are located in a similar place and are pretty self-explanatory.

-RAM : Random Access Memory

*Perhaps some of the smallest chips in the computer. They look like short rulers and plug directly into the motherboard in rows. These hold data temporarily during processes. They add to the (more…)

Thoughts on popular computer hardware

Computer hardware is all you can see smell and touch!

What are the main components of computer hardware?

First we got the computer box. It’s where you place all the components inside. Some companies are running a profitable business making good looking boxes such as Thermaltake!

Next we have the power supply. It’s the small box you can see inside that has a lot of cable and that you connect to the electricity. Its full of cables to connect to all other components. No power supply, no energy to power up the computer.

Next we got the motherboard. It’s that huge thing you all other small card connected to. It’s the place where the power supply is connected to and the place where you will connect all other components. Needless to day this is the most important piece of hardware of the entire computer. However some people think it is not so important like the experts say. I reply, try to get a cheaper motherboard and see what happens to the computer stability!

Now let’s check the processor. It’s the place where all the information is processed. It’s that small chip that has a huge fan over it. Why does it need such big fan? (more…)

Computer Software: Adding zeal to the computer system

Computer software is a very general term used to highlight the collection of the computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some specific tasks on a computer system. These software’s are of various types. Firstly, there are application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for the user. Secondly, there are system software such as operating system which interface with the hardware to provide necessary services for the application software and middle-ware which controls and coordinates distributed systems. Sometimes, the term “software” is used in much broader sense saying anything which is not hardware but can be used with hardware like tapes, films etc. is software.

In computer, the software is loaded into RAM and executed in CPU. At first level, the software consists of the machine language which is specific to the individual processor. Here, the machine language is group of binary instructions. Software is the ordered sequence of these instructions which change the preceding state of the computer hardware thus making it better. It is usually written in a high-level programming language (HLL) that are more easier and efficient for the human to use. HLL are interpreted into machine language code. Software’s may be written (more…)
